Stabilization of the patella

Stabilization of the patella

Stabilization of the patella

The patella can be instable for many reasons. Some of them include congenital slackness of the soft tissue and bone dysplasia (insufficiently developed bone structures) mostly caused by injuries of the ligaments that stabilize patella.
The treatment of an instable patella depends on the cause of its instability.

The patella can be stabilized by arthroscopic cutting of the connecting tissue on the lateral side of the patella and stitching the connecting tissue on the medial side of the patella. In this way, the patella is brought into the right position again, regarding the thigh bone. When the case is traumatic luxating (popping out of place) patella, which evokes a rupture of the medial patellofemoral ligament, a reconstruction of that ligament is performed.

Bone surgeries are also possible to stabilize the patella. The rehabilitation depends on the type of surgery.
